Material Handling Protection and Wear-Reduction Solutions

UHMW-PE is an engineering thermoplastic manufactured from polyethylene with a molecular weight above 1.5 million. Its exceptionally long molecular chains give the material a practical combination of abrasion resistance, impact toughness and low-friction sliding performance. For operations handling coal, ore, sand, aggregates, grain, powders or other bulk materials, properly selected liner panels can help keep contact surfaces cleaner and support more consistent material flow.

The 3–5 million molecular-weight grade is particularly suitable where repeated sliding wear and material impact occur together. Installed on hoppers, bunkers, bins, transfer points and equipment contact areas, it creates a smooth, self-lubricating surface. This reduces the tendency of many materials to adhere to steel or concrete substrates, helping operators address build-up, bridging and blockage without relying solely on manual cleaning.

Key Performance Advantages

Exceptional Abrasion Resistance

This material offers wear resistance substantially beyond that of carbon steel, nylon and standard PE sheet. Its low dynamic friction coefficient of 0.07–0.20 allows bulk solids to move more freely across the surface. In practical service, this is valuable at high-wear discharge zones, loading points and chutes where abrasive particles repeatedly scour the lining. The self-lubricating surface also helps limit material carryback and reduces the likelihood of persistent deposits.

High Impact Toughness

Unlike brittle materials that may crack under sudden loading, UHMW-PE retains strong impact resistance and toughness. It is well suited for applications exposed to falling material, intermittent collision or vibration. Its low-temperature performance is another important benefit: the material remains tough in cold working conditions rather than becoming easily brittle. This makes it a dependable option for outdoor installations and facilities operating in severe winter climates.

Chemical and Moisture Resistance

With water absorption of no more than 0.01%, the liner is highly resistant to moisture-related dimensional concerns. It does not readily absorb water and can be used in humid, wet or wastewater-related environments. Resistance to acids, alkalis and salts supports use in many corrosive service conditions where exposed metal surfaces may require frequent maintenance. For chemical media, the suitability of the complete system should always be confirmed against the actual process conditions.

Flexible Fabrication for Site Requirements

Panels can be cut, drilled, grooved, thermally bent and welded to suit installation layouts. This allows fabricators and maintenance teams to prepare wear parts for straight walls, curved areas, bolt patterns, inspection openings and transition zones. Color, size and logo engraving can be customized when project identification or visual management is required. Custom-machined components can also be supplied for applications where a standard flat panel is not sufficient.

Typical Application Areas

These liner panels are used across mining, ports, bulk storage, food processing, medical-related equipment and industrial handling environments. Coal bunker liners are commonly selected to improve discharge behavior in coal storage areas and reduce wall build-up. Silo liners can provide a lower-friction contact surface in storage bins handling powders, granules and other bulk materials. Chute liners are frequently installed in transfer and discharge sections where sliding abrasion and impact need to be managed.

  • Coal bunkers, material bins and hopper linings to help prevent sticking and blockage.
  • Mining, quarry and aggregate-yard wear surfaces exposed to ore, stone, sand and abrasive bulk solids.
  • Engineering machinery outrigger pads and support pads requiring wear resistance and impact tolerance.
  • Wastewater-treatment linings and moisture-prone areas requiring corrosion resistance.
  • Port fender boards and marine contact surfaces.
  • Food machinery pads, sliding blocks and wear components where a low-friction polymer surface is beneficial.
  • Football training rebound boards, sliders, spacer blocks and other customized wear parts.

Selection Notes for Reliable Service

For the best result, liner selection should consider material size, flow characteristics, impact height, operating temperature, fixing method and substrate condition. Smooth liner surfaces may improve flow, but the installation design must securely support the panel and allow for the geometry of the equipment. Mechanical fastening patterns, recessed holes and panel joints should be planned according to the service area and maintenance access requirements.

UHMW-PE is not intended for sustained high-temperature environments. Its heat resistance is moderate, and applications above the stated working range should use a more appropriate material. The material also has lower hardness than metal; sharp, hard objects can scratch its surface. These characteristics should be evaluated honestly during engineering selection, especially where hot materials, sharp scrap or concentrated point loading are present.
